Vitamin C is often regarded as a wrinkle fighter and an anti-aging agent. The main objective in using vitamin C, in scientific terms, is to increase the synthesis of collagen, a structural protein that is found in skin. An additional benefit in using vitamin C is for its’ capability of countering free radicals which cause damage to the skin. Vitamin C is an anti-oxidant and protects the skin from these free radicals.

Vitamin C however, faces a major challenge. This is related to the oxidation tendency of many vitamin C skin care products. When vitamin C comes into contact with any oxidizing agent, like air, the vitamin C gets oxidized, thus making the product useless. The oxidized vitamin C will impart a yellowish-brown color.

The manufacturers of vitamin C skin care products have tried to deal with this oxidation problem in multiple ways and research on vitamin C skin care products is on the top of their list. One such method of retaining effectiveness of vitamin C for a long term is to keep a high concentration of 10% and storing it in a dark colored container. Some manufactures use a derivative of vitamin c, like ascorbyl palmitate and magnesium ascorbyl phosphate. These are not only more stable but also inexpensive. Even though the derivative-based products are not as effective as vitamin C skin care products, their stability against oxidation is a very desirable feature that makes them very attractive. Moreover, these are known to be less irritating as well.

Many manufactures agree that the best way to buy a vitamin c product now is to buy it in a serum form. Serums contain a more potent dose of vitamin C and are usually contained in a dark colored bottle or encapsulated with a special delivery system. This protects the vitamin c from oxidating too quickly.
