Skin care for men would seem like an alien topic to most men a few years ago. However, more and more men are now realizing the importance of using good skin care products. Even though a male’s skin is very different from that of a female, the basic routine is quite similar.

Proper skin care for men starts with cleansing. Water-soluble cleansers are preferred. Cleansing helps remove the dirt, grease and pollutants from the skin and helps in preventing pore clogging. Cleansing should be done at least once every day, even better if it is done twice a day. Using soap products on the face is discouraged.

For men, skin care revolves a lot around shaving. Luckily for men, shaving is a great way to exfoliate the dead skin cells from the skin. Shaving foam, gel, cream and after shave lotion are mens most important skin care products. However they really should pay attention in choosing the correct products to use for their particular skin care needs. Proper skin care for men should also include the use of good quality razors. Swivel-head razors are preferred since they are known to reduce cuts. It is also necessary that you use razors properly. Be gentle when using your razor. Do not scratch it against your skin, but use a soft and smooth action. Shaving is a matter of removing hair with the added benefit of removing dead skin cells at the surface, not injuring the healthy new skin.

Male skin is generally thicker and oilier than that of a womans. They also have larger pores and more active sebaceous glands. However, due to regular shaving, the skin can get dehydrated quite easily. Alcohol-based aftershaves should be avoided and be replaced with a moisturizer instead. Some shaving foams and gels have a built-in moisturizer to aid in shaving. However, this is not enough. Men need to incorporate the use of a good brand moisturizer after shaving on a consistent basis. A night time moisturizer would also only benefit the skin as well. The products should be easily absorbed and be patted gently over the face and massaged gently using upward strokes.

Though a man’s skin is less susceptible to skin cancer caused by UV radiation, using a sunscreen with the proper SPF is still an important part of skin care for men. You can usually find a moisturizer that combines sunscreen within the product, especially with the better skin care products available today.

Another good option for men is to use skin care products that have natural ingredients like aloe vera, sea salt and coconut, etc. Naturally antiseptic oils like lavender and tea tree oil also provide benefits to skin for both men and women alike.

Choosing and using skin care for men is not as difficult as a lot of men think. It just asks for a few minutes every day in order to give you healthy skin for the present and the future.

Many of the better brands combine a cleansing agent, moisturizer, etc., all within a step-by-step system that takes all the guesswork out of choosing and using the correct products.
