Caring for dry skin is not just about using moisturizers, but in using them properly. The best dry skin care protocol is to cleanse the skin before the application of moisturizer. You can make this application even more effective by applying the moisturizer while the skin is still damp after cleansing. Also, make sure that you use soap-free products, especially on your face, neck and arms. Regular exfoliation also helps in the skins ability to absorb the moisturizer properly by removing the dead skin cells first. However, try not to over exfoliate dry skin or any skin type for that matter. Also, avoid too much direct sun exposure by simply using a moisturizer with an effective SPF sunscreen. Many daytime moisturizers include a SPF sun protection. A good skin care line will usually provide a moisturizer for daytime use and a more intense one for nighttime use, without the SPF.

There are also many natural products for dry skin care that do not include any synthetic chemicals. These more nature-based dry skin care products supply lipid enhancements to the skin that enable moisture retention within the skin. Another important factor in caring for dry skin is the temperature of water you use to shower or for washing your face. Use warm or tepid water to wash skin. Washing with water that is too hot or too cold can increase the dryness on skin.

Be gentle with your dry skin. You should avoid harsh detergents and alcohol-based cleansers. After a face wash, do not rub your towel on your face, just pat gently to blot the water off.
